Horden Parish Council are excited to announce that they have installed a public sculpture in the Welfare Park.
“I aint gonna work on Maggie’s farm no more” is the latest sculpture from locally acclaimed artist, Ray Lonsdale. You may know his work in Seaham with the “Tommy” sculpture.
The controversial sculpture, believed to be the only one of its type in the country, reflects the devastating effect of Margaret Thatcher’s programme of pit closures on mining communities throughout the country in the 1980’s, including Horden, where an entire way of life disappeared overnight.
Horden Parish Council purchased the sculpture to honour Britain’s proud coal mining heritage and core working class values and are determined that Horden’s roots should be celebrated, linking the past to the present.
The Parish Council felt that the best place to site the sculpture is the Welfare Park, which was built for the miners and their families over 80 years ago.
